I particularly like the Taipei Performing Arts Centre project. Although I’m aware of how to create such randomised structure to a shell I am not currently sure how this could be applied within a volume. For instance if you wanted to support a surface using a similar system to the structure shown here. Any ideas as to how 3DS Max could be used to achieve this?
Certainly. It is hard to explain it here in a comment.. but let’s work on this today and tomorrow. The first thing you have to do is have a conceptual idea how you want to implement the structure (e.g. the columns are sections of a parabolic conical surface or the structure falls at an angle of 23 from the lowest points in the surface etc etc..) Then you can deploy that idea in 3DS Max using rigorous modeling.
In that case I shall be attempting to follow such a method today in the computer lab. I assume the intention of applying such conceptual ideas is to give some order to the apparent random nature of the structure, which is itself could be a very efficient structure as seen in nature time and time again.
Exactly. Check out the following design for a “Leaf Table” by Joris Laarman and Marc Fornes
