Urgent: Distributed Rendering – Please Comment
Dear Students,
I have asked ARCCA and the WSA to help install the distributed rendering engine on 3D Studio MAX for your use. I am hoping it will work. One piece of information I need is when do you need to have this in place.
I would like you to comment on it and add your name if you need to use it and if so.. what days. Calculate a time savings of 300% to 400% (so a quarter of the time needed on your laptop)
There is no maxwell… only the normal mental ray rendering engine that comes with 3DS Max Design.
I have put in a request to purchase Maxwell, but with Dom’s absence this will be too late for this term.
Regards,
Wassim
I won’t require distributed rendering until next week, when I begin working on the final presentation. Probably from wednesday onwards, with concentration on models/ rendering drawings etc earlier in the week.
Unfortunately I use a combination of Maxwell Render and Artlantis…but it will be a great addition for the future.
I’d like it from the beginning of next week onwards if possible. I guess the time saving will depend on how many computers are being used at the time, i.e. if there are eight computers rendering the task will be completed in roughly an eighth of the time (no?). It seems difficult to give a percentage increase in time but, from what I can gather from forums, the difference will be from days to a matter of hours – it took about 40 mins to do the ‘draft’ render I posted and I’ll definitely want to do some on ‘high’.
Tell ARCCA that, for me, things like walkthroughs just won’t be possible without distributed rendering. On a side note, I’m having difficulty persuading INSRV to upgarde just ONE machine to the free trial version of Revit 2011, which I’m using at home, because, annoyingly, Revit is designed to not be backwards compatible. They’re giving me crappy excuses and I know Dom would do it without question. Perhaps I need departmental backing, but I’ll discuss it tomorrow.
The testing I have conducted with ARCCA and Dom revealed that it cannot effectively use more than 4 computers. That is why I limited the expectation to 1/4 the time. I timed the test rendering and I achieved a 400% increase in speed.
I will let them know this is needed for next week, but please understand, this is not guaranteed. They are all willing to help, but we’ll see if we can do it.
