Contouring Experimentation

As one of the methods of digital fabrication that I identified, I have created a site model of the area by contouring the site using plywood cut with a jigsaw. This was then cast in concrete to convey the permanace of the site as well as the archaeological history of Royal Fort House and surrounding area. The model portrays an image of a ruined city rather well I feel!

Growth Strategies

Evolutionary strategies

Site specific growth strategies to arrange the proposed programmatic elements. These were done initially to experiment with the different ideas but I’m going to try and analyse these mathematically to develop rules that can possibly be applied later in scripting.

For Andrew: Farmadelphia

Front studio farmadelphia

“Farmadelphia,” from Front Studio, a proposal for the transformation of Philadelphia, in which that city’s vacant and abandoned lots are turned into a thriving agricultural zone – complete with crops grown for local consumption and soil remediation, and with an eye toward future tourism, including surreal petting zoos, hay rides, and even corn mazes.

Robot organising brick panel geometry

Work conducted at the ETH by the Architecture and Digital Fabrication department. They conduct experimental research into the possibilities of digital fabrications and collaborate on certain professional projects when the opportunity arises.

January review

January presentationJanuary presentation

Here is the layout used for the january presentation. The initial proposal has evolved from a new architectural faculty to a comptational design facility on Bristol University’s campus, maintaining strong links to the architectural profession. I am intending to examine the processes that would occur in such a facility, as well as experimenting with some of the methods of production that were discussed. Although I have an idea as to the area of the site, I need to compile a list of necessary parameters to determine a suitable location.

Programme Character

Character evolution

These are my initial ideas which I’m beginning to hone to inform my programme. A brainstorm of the direction in which I could take my earlier research.

Production Process

Car Assembly Process

Car Assembly Process

Looking into the manufacturing process, i decided to analyse the key elements within any production that would be required should I incorporate such into my programme. As car assembly was revolutionary in its initial inception back in 1907 by Henry Ford, I decided to use this as my base. The use of a conveyor system for assembly was pioneered by him and has since informed more or less the whole manufacturing industry, as car production continues to do.

Primer Construction

This is a prototype version of the apeture surface which I intend to make for the primer. I’m still refining the shape and structure of the individual tessalation cells.Surface_6a

Apeture Experimentation

Here are some further studies that test what difference variation in shape makes to the compression of the two surfaces and the restrictions of using such a construction technique.

Here is an example of some modelling I’ve been doing in GC enabling the different forms shown. final_5_copy
